Open Science

The goal of open science is to make research outputs, including scholarly publications, research data, code, and methods openly available for the public to freely access and reuse. Open science strengthens transparency of the research process, allowing the public to see how experiments were designed, how data were collected, and how the data were analyzed to better understand the results presented.

Brown's Health and Biomedical Library Services (HBLS) provide open science services to assist researchers with making their research outputs open. Use the HBLS Research Consultation Request Form to schedule an online or in-person meeting with a librarian.

HBLS Research Consultation Request Form

HBLS can assist in reviewing publisher agreements to look for opportunities to preserve authors’ rights to their own work. HBLS can also consult on navigating fair use, including the reuse of figures and tables in a publication, dissertation, or thesis.

Author Rights in Publishing

A growing number of research funders require applicants to submit a data management and sharing plan (DMSP) with their proposals, detailing how data will be managed throughout the project and shared with other researchers and the public after the project ends. HBLS offers consultations on writing and reviewing DMSPs, including using the DMPTool.

Research data management and sharing

The Library provides the Brown community with access to LabArchives, an electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) to assist researchers with organizing and documenting the data from their experiments and studies. Contact HBLS for assistance with using LabArchives.

LabArchives@Brown

The Library has a growing number of agreements with publishers for Brown-affiliated corresponding authors to receive waivers and discounts to publish their articles as open access. HBLS offers consultations on locating potential opportunities to publish a journal article open access, including the self-archiving of submitted and accepted manuscripts.

Open Access Publishing

Federal agencies that fund scientific and technological research have Public Access policies requiring researchers to make final peer-reviewed manuscripts that are accepted for publication available in the funder’s publication repository, such as PubMed Central (PMC) for the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation’s Public Access Repository (NSF-PAR). HBLS offers consultations on depositing manuscripts in these federal public access repositories and managing publications and compliance.

Public Access policies

Research funders and journals may require that data supporting the published results in submitted manuscripts be made available in a data sharing repository and that the location of the data is cited in the publication. Brown is a member of several open access repositories for quantitative and qualitative data as well as clinical data. HBLS offers consultations on selecting a data sharing repository that complies with a funder or journal’s data availability policies.
