Instruction and Workshops

Library experts specialize in preparing students for research assignments and offer support in core research tools and methods in areas including digital humanities, GIS, and more.

Library instructional services are available for campus and community programs.

Partner with library experts to integrate resources and research skills in your courses and across the curriculum.

Library experts can work with you to:

  • Select or update course materials
  • Design new assignments that incorporate information or data literacy, digital scholarship, or other research skills
  • Prepare students for assignments requiring specific skills, tools, methods, or strategies

Course Reserves

The Library works with instructors to make sure students have easy access to required and recommended course materials. Materials are available electronically through Canvas or the course website. Visit Course Reserves for more information, including how to request a new acquisition related to your course.

  • Integrate new resources: Discover and incorporate materials, databases, and digital tools relevant to your field.
  • Align with curriculum changes: Ensure library resources and support seamlessly integrate with any updates or revisions to your departmental or institutional curriculum.
  • Adapt to evolving information ecosystems and tools: Equip your students with the skills to navigate and critically evaluate new forms of information, data, and media.
  • Explore innovative teaching methodologies: Collaborate on incorporating information literacy and research skills in trusted, new, and engaging ways.

Teach with the Library

We collaborate in various formats (Zoom, in person, asynchronously) to help you integrate resources, concepts, and library expertise into your teaching. 

Designing effective library instruction is a collaborative process! If you’re not quite sure what you need, fill out the Instruction Request Form. Share as much information as possible about your goals and anticipated needs in the class. We will connect you with the appropriate library expert who can begin planning.

Instructional Areas of Emphasis

Introduce your students to the Library's invaluable resources and services right from the start. We offer tailored orientations to equip them with the foundational knowledge they need to navigate library collections and access support. Fill out the Instruction Request Form to get started.

Cultivate essential information literacy skills in your students, enabling them to effectively find, evaluate, and use information ethically. We can work with you to embed these skills into your course design and assignments. Fill out the Instruction Request Form to get started.

The John Hay Library is committed to fostering an environment that encourages exploration and meaningful use of its collections through an active teaching and learning program. The Hay serves as a laboratory to develop primary source literacy and critical thinking skills, build new knowledge through collaborations with colleagues, faculty, and students, and contribute to an interdisciplinary community of scholars of all ages at Brown, throughout Rhode Island, and beyond. Library experts provide support for finding, processing, and analyzing data (particularly geospatial, census, socio-economic, financial, and environmental) for applications in GIS, data visualization, and quantitative research methods.

Library experts in digital methodologies can help you with designing class digital projects, and introduce digital methods and tools in your class.

We are committed to supporting students throughout the research lifecycle. Library experts offer individual and team consultations (Zoom, in person, and email), group workshops, and online resources to guide students through the research process, from formulating research questions to sharing, presenting, and preserving their work.
