The John Hay Library is pleased to offer a biannual fellowship for research relating to the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection, the Hay’s internationally renowned collection originally devoted to the study of military and naval uniforms and iconography. The collection has since expanded to trace the social, political, economic, and cultural influence of world militaries during war and peace. From the 1500s to the present, the collection explores military traditions in world societies, including the expansion of imperialism and colonization of Africa and the Americas. The artwork, photographs, and manuscripts in this collection provide nuanced insight into all aspects of military life — from the quotidian realities of soldiering to military ritual and ceremonial display to the experience of combat. In conversation with other collections such as the papers of war correspondent Lyn Crost ’38, the Charles Woodberry McLellan Collection of Lincolniana, and the Vietnam Veterans Archive, the Hay’s holdings provide unique insights into the rhetoric of war and the visual legacy of soldiers and soldiering.
The fellowship provides a monthly stipend for up to two months of research at the John Hay Library. It is open to individuals engaged in pre- and post-doctoral or independent research or creative work. Applicants who do not reside in the United States must either indicate their citizenship or already hold the J-1 visa or equivalent documents that will allow them to accept the stipend.

Priority will be given to proposals that express interest in materials that have not been digitized from the collection and the Library's related holdings
