The University’s Human Resources site provides extensive information about working at Brown, including benefits, flexible work arrangements, employee accommodations, and other resources. Through its internal programs and resources for staff, as well as through educational benefits, Brown University Human Resources prioritizes employee growth and development at all levels.
Within the Library, our work and workplace culture are guided by our Core Values and our strategic investments in organizational development and professional growth, some of which are described in the Library’s most recent Strategic Plan.
The Library is a diverse and inclusive learning organization that serves its broad campus mission and diverse campus community with staff that bring a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, enriching the Library’s central academic functions as conductors, creators, and caretakers of knowledge.
The Library encompasses a wide range of positions and job functions within and across its departments. There are particular structures and opportunities geared for different categories of employees.
- The Program for Library Professionals (PLP) actively supports the development of librarians and allied professionals for contributing to the success of Brown University’s strategic academic priorities and positively impacting the profession at large. The PLP is a commitment to supporting a librarian’s professional development and progression while they are at Brown. It is not a performance management system; rather, the PLP is a mentorship/leadership/practice-based development program in alignment with University policies and goals.
- United Service and Allied Workers of Rhode Island is the collective bargaining unit for designated paraprofessional and many other Library positions that fall outside the PLP. The structures and conditions for these jobs, including opportunities to advance, are governed by a collective bargaining agreement.
- For leadership and supervisory roles, the Library emphasizes continuous improvement in managerial skills through individual and collective developmental opportunities, as well as a robust, collegial, and mutually supportive community of practice.
